Hi everyone, it was a beautiful weekend in Denver. Friday was 75 degrees, Saturday it was about 65, and today about 50. It was nice to be outside without a big jacket out and exercise outside in light layers. I was able to run outside, and go on two bike rides! It was a very busy weekend of work, so it was great to be outdoors when I could. Now that it’s been getting warmer in Denver, I’ve been thinking about spring and road races. The first race I ever ran was The Valentines Day 5K in college. I loved that race, and it was the perfect distance for a new runner. One of my friends asked me about different races recently, and I thought I would share a few reasons I love 5Ks and 10Ks.
If you are new to running, I would recommend a 5K or 10K. These distances won’t take much time to train for. If you have taken time off running (or are new to the sport), I would recommend going on 2-3 runs in a weeks leading up to the race. However, I know people who have only run one or two times before a 5 or 10K. These shorter training runs will help building your confidence for race day.
Since these races are shorter, you can use them to test your speed. It’s a lot easier to hit your Personal Record (PR) during a shorter race.
I really enjoy doing a 5K or 10K when I visit a new city. It can be a good way to see some of the top spots and different landmarks in a city. I suggest doing a shorter distance race with friends.

The past few years, I have done the Bolder Boulder race, which is one of the largest 10Ks in the country. It is along the University of Colorado campus, and it’s a lot of fun! There are a lot of fans along the course, many of them have food and drinks to offer the runners. Last year, there was even a trampoline on the side of the course. It’s a really energetic run to do with friends, and it ends at Folsom Field! I also recommend, Crazy Legs 8K (almost 5 miles) in Madison and Get in Gear which has a 2K, 5K, 10K, and half marathon in Minneapolis.
I also recommend looking into marathon relays, they have them across the country and its fun to complete a course as a team. My company sponsors about 20 teams to run the Colfax Marathon relay each year. At this race, there are 5 people on a team to complete 26.2 miles, its a great way to get back in shape with friends.

Also, unrelated sidenote, Iphone screen protectors are bomb. I thought my phone was broken, the mute button kept getting hit while i was on the phone. The Verizon store employee told me I had a screen protector on my phone. DUH. I had totally forgot about it. She replaced this, and my phone is working a lot better now! I’m so happy!
So now that you know more about 5Ks and 10Ks, its time to mark your calendars for a spring race! Please let me know about your upcoming races, I cant wait to hear about them!
